Visa Pilots Tap to Ride on Shenzhen Metro, Enhancing Cross-Border Travel Experience Across the Greater Bay Area
06/30/2026
Visa, a global leader in digital payments, today announced the launch of its Tap to Ride pilot program on the Shenzhen Metro. The initiative aims to enhance payment convenience for inbound travellers in mainland China and further drive the development of unified transit payments across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Following Hong Kong and Guangzhou, Shenzhen becomes the third city in the GBA to support Visa Tap to Ride. As regional transit networks become increasingly integrated, Visa is driving a seamless GBA travel experience characterised by cross-border mobility, unified payments, and seamless connectivity.
“As a core city within the GBA and a key international gateway to mainland China, Shenzhen plays an important role in enabling seamless cross-border mobility,” said Paulina Leong, General Manager of Visa Hong Kong and Macau. “The introduction of Visa acceptance on the Shenzhen Metro brings a new level of convenience for international travellers and Hong Kong commuters, allowing them to tap and ride using a familiar payment method without the need for local setup. As connectivity across the GBA continues to deepen, Visa is drawing on its global scale to bridge international travellers with cities across the region, making everyday experiences like urban transit simpler and more accessible. We will continue to work closely with partners to enhance the regional payments ecosystem and support a more connected, frictionless travel experience across the GBA.”
Network-wide Tap to Ride coverage delivers enhanced travel experience
The pilot covers all 17 lines and 432 stations of the Shenzhen Metro network, allowing passengers to tap in and out directly at gates displaying the Visa logo. Inbound travellers to Shenzhen with a Visa chip card or a Visa-enabled mobile device can enjoy a seamless travel experience without the need to purchase tickets, exchange cash, or download mobile applications — enabling a true Tap to Ride experience.
Furthermore, the service extends to the Business Class carriages on Line 11, where passengers can complete ticket validation with an extra tap, further elevating the commuting experience.
Connecting the GBA to meet the transit demands of international events
With the launch of Tap to Ride in Shenzhen, the city joins Hong Kong and Guangzhou as the third metropolis in the GBA to offer this service. Supported by the continuous interconnection of regional transit networks, Visa is fostering a GBA transit experience defined by cross-border mobility, unified payments, and seamless connectivity.
With the APEC forum scheduled to take place in Shenzhen in November 2026, the influx of international travellers is expected to grow steadily. The Tap to Ride pilot will provide visitors with a globally accepted transit payment method, lowering cross-border travel barriers, elevating international service standards, and presenting an open and highly accessible image to welcome global visitors.
In Hong Kong, Visa Tap to Ride has already been widely adopted across various public transport modes, including the MTR, buses, trams, and ferries, establishing a comprehensive local transit payment network. With the launch of the service in Shenzhen, cross-border travel within the GBA is accelerating toward a seamless, "one-card-fits-all" experience.
Widespread domestic and global adoption drives transit payments innovation
In recent years, Visa has consistently expanded Tap to Ride across public transport networks in mainland China, with full implementation now achieved in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou:
- Beijing Subway: Covers all 29 lines and 523 stations.
- Shanghai Metro: Fully piloted across 21 lines and 517 stations.
- Chengdu: Covers over 400 metro stations and more than 7,000 buses.
- Guangzhou Metro: Supported across the entire network, continuously strengthening intercity transport links.
Globally, Visa has implemented over 800 Tap to Ride projects in the public transit sector and supported billions of contactless transit transactions, making it one of the most widely used travel payment methods for international travellers1.
Exclusive rewards for cross-border commuters
To celebrate expanding regional transit links and support cross-border mobility, Visa is also highlighting an active incentive for local travellers. From now until 31 July 2026, eligible Hong Kong and Macau Visa cardholders can enjoy up to a 10% cash rebate when tapping to ride on overseas public transit networks that accept Visa payments2. By combining regional infrastructure expansion with consumer rewards, Visa continues to drive the adoption of smart, contactless transit payments globally.
