Visa Powers Smart Mobility for Hong Kong Travellers with Taxi Promotion

07/22/2025

  • From today to 31 December 2025, Visa cardholders can enjoy HKD 10 cashback on individual taxi rides of HKD 100 or more, available across nearly 1,500 fleet and standard taxis.
  • Building on Visa’s ongoing efforts to advance digital payments for taxis, this initiative positions contactless payment as a key enabler of smart mobility and reinforces Hong Kong’s status as an international tourism hub.

Visa today announced the launch of a promotion initiative to support the government’s Taxi Fleet Scheme and accelerate digital payment adoption across Hong Kong’s taxi sector. Running from today to 31 December 2025, the initiative allows cardholders using Visa cards issued in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan to enjoy an HKD 10 cashback per trip upon spending HKD 1001 or more on a single taxi ride. The offer is available through participating ride-hailing apps and in-vehicle POS terminals equipped with Visa Tap to Pay.

Expanding on Visa’s continued efforts to enable digital taxi payments that started in 2022, the launch of the Taxi Fleet Scheme—alongside the peak inbound travel season—presents a timely opportunity to accelerate adoption. Over the past two years, the number of Hong Kong taxis accepting Visa has increased more than tenfold2, thanks to Visa’s growing partnerships with various taxi service and digital payment partners. This campaign also marks an important milestone in Visa’s broader smart mobility roadmap in Hong Kong, following the rollout of contactless payments across the MTR, buses, trams, ferries and more.

"Hong Kong continues to be amongst the top places to visit for global travellers, thanks to our world-class public transport system that ensures seamless connectivity and a worry-free experience for every visitor," said Paulina Leong, General Manager of Hong Kong and Macau at Visa. "For the millions of tourists who visit Hong Kong each year, taxis are often their first touchpoint and an essential mode of transport when exploring the city. By enabling Visa card payments in taxis, we are extending the convenience, security, and rewards of everyday Visa usage into an integral part of urban mobility. Our partnerships with taxi fleet operators reflect Visa's long-term commitment to enabling innovation and making payments effortless—anywhere, anytime."

Elevating visitor journeys with frictionless transport

Taxis play a major role in shaping Hong Kong’s image as a world-class travel destination. By enhancing payment convenience and offering more options for travellers, Visa’s smart mobility efforts will continue to support the city’s tourism and transport ambitions, enabling smoother, more visitor-friendly journeys from airport to city.

Becky Ip, Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) said, “HKTB is committed to reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a world-class tourism destination. The rollout of digital taxi payments is a welcoming move that can uplift the service quality and offer greater convenience for locals and visitors. We welcome partners like Visa to join us in elevating visitor experience in Hong Kong, allowing our guests a hassle-free navigation while enjoying all that Hong Kong has to offer.”

Currently, close to 1,500 taxis—including both fleet and non-fleet taxis—are equipped to accept Visa Tap to Pay via POS terminals and ride-hailing apps. Participating vehicles will feature dedicated Visa logo decals on the window of the taxis for easy identification. At the Hong Kong International Airport, fleet taxis also benefit from exclusive pick-up zones, streamlining pickup for arriving travellers and providing a seamless point of contact for tourists as they step into the city. Following the official launch of the Taxi Fleet Scheme, the number of taxis equipped to accept Visa Tap to Pay is expected to expand significantly, with an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 additional vehicles anticipated to enter service over the next year.

"Being granted Hong Kong’s first official Taxi Fleet Licence underscores our commitment to advancing urban mobility across the city," said Sonia Cheng, Executive Director of SynCab Service Limited. "Together with innovative partners such as Visa and DASH, we are building an integrated mobility ecosystem that combines seamless payment solutions and elevated service standards. This initiative establishes a new benchmark for transportation excellence in Hong Kong, delivering reliable quality today, innovating for tomorrow's smart city needs, and staying synchronised with your life every step of the way."

Scaling smart mobility globally

Over the past few years, Visa has been committed to advancing Hong Kong’s smart mobility vision by enabling seamless digital payments across key transit modes—including MTR, buses, trams, ferries and more. Globally, Tap to Pay has become the preferred payment method in nearly 60 markets and territories, with over 870 contactless transit projects activated and more than 2 billion contactless transit transactions processed in fiscal year 2024 alone. By promoting consistent, secure, and seamless transit experiences, Visa is committed to shaping the future of smart cities both in Hong Kong and across the globe.
